exploding orgy of gender anarchy: On Shipping and Fanboys
This is my letter to angry fanboys.
First, let it be known that I love most fanboys. When I go to a con, most of the guys there…
I believe you’re failing to see the issue on purpose.
It’s not the “sexualization” of the characters that gets to the “angry fanboys”, it’s that you make character breaking changes. Example: Steve is straight and has been in several relationships with women over the years. NEVER been even hinted that he could be “bi” or “gay”, and yet, there go the fangirls and turn him gay. Why? If you love the character, wouldn’t it make more sense to leave him as he is? Or do women all of a sudden crave gay men (you know, the kind that don’t care about women sexually). I’m ok with gay characters, as long as they’re “originally” gay already. Hulkling and Wiccan, Northstar, Ricter and Longshot, Daken, and whoever else you can insert in this list. It’s when you do the character breaking that’s annoying, and that’s what should stop.I honestly prefer that over reinterpreting the morals and believes of characters, but that’s just me. And even then I just leave people to their devices unless I am being asked for my opinion on the subject.
Fans will be fans. ANY fan, no matter the gender, will always have their own interpretation. Not everybody will agree, but people should still learn to coexist with the opinions of others and just stay away from what they hate (save if their interpretation is harming any specific group then be free to tell them that - obviously straight (most of the times white) men have nothing to complain here).
Of course there are some fans that do fetichize gay men, but the same can be said for men and lesbians/bisexuals - but every men ignored our complains.
But because the comic industry is still very male-centered (is there any moment in the Avengers where Black Widow talks with another woman over something other than men? If she even talks to another woman at all I can’t remember) and the relationships (I am talking about any kind of relationships - friendship, hate, etc) between men are way more developed than those between men and women… is this really surprising, when women are starting to have a growing interest on/are no longer ashamed of liking comics? Add the fact that in general they are more open to sexualities (not implying that you aren’t because I know you, or any men) and the result is not that shocking.
Give people a balanced - gender-wise, race-wise, sexuality-wise - group of superheroes with a good variation and interpretation of relationships and you’ll see the difference - and even there you’ll never escape the dreaded FAN GOOGLES.
I see, but there ARE relationships in comics, and some have even influenced\started MAJOR storylines. Cyclops\Jean\Wolverine were crucial to the Phoenix Saga, Hulk\Caiera to World War Hulk, Cap\Sharon Carter to Civil War\Cap’s Death, Vision\Scarlet Witch to House of M, Thor\Sif\Beta Ray Bill to the Twilight Sword with Surtur, Peter Parker and Mary Jane to a lot, and recently to the (hated) One More Day, the list goes on and on. There’s something for everyone if people actually READ the books instead of flipping through to the battle scenes.
I do understand your point though, and the morals and beliefs does bother me more, but this doesn’t stop being an issue. It’s still character breaking, and people who supposedly love the characters should respect them.

They call me lady tiger, but I never eat my young: That Cultural Thing
I’m gonna have to do a line by line takedown of this post.
I once heard someone say something along the lines of:
If you need government to protect your culture, then your culture is already dead
These cultural appropriation-ists should consider this…
